Though the Avengers are initially unruly and ill-fitting, Fury uses the death of Agent Phil Coulson at the hands of Loki to galvanize the Avengers, enabling them to counter Loki and the Chitauri invasion. Fury defends the Avengers and refuses to comply with an order to unleash a nuclear strike on New York City. After his field authority is superseded, Fury uses a rocket launcher to prevent the take-off of the first jet, although his misses the second one, however once the missile is launched it its guided by Iron Man through the Chitauri portal, destroying the latter’s mother ship, ultimately vindicating Fury’s argument.
