Tycho is believed to have formed about 100 million years ago when an asteroid or comet slammed into the Moon. The Tycho Crater is also featured prominently in the film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” in scenes where a 4 million year old alien monolith (“Tycho Magnetic Anomaly”, or TMA-1) was found, buried forty feet beneath the lunar surface.
