When Luke begins to express doubt in the power of the Force, Yoda demonstrates his power by dredging Skywalker’s sunken X-Wing out of the swamp water and transporting the vehicle to solid ground.
R2-D2: R2-D2’s various retractable appendages and instruments enable him to serve the functions of starship mechanic and computer interface specialist. R2 originally performs maintenance duty on behalf of the Royal Engineers of Naboo aboard Queen Amidala’s royal starship. He enables the ship to escape the Trade Federation’s blockade. Later, on Tatooine, R2-D2 first encounters C-3PO, the protocol droid which was being assembled by the young Anakin Skywalker.
Darth Vader: Maimed and disfigured beyond repair, sustained by a mechanized life support system and prosthetics, the battered and disfigured Sith Lord Darth Vader serves as both the apprentice and enforcer of Emperor Palpatine. Battling against his son, Luke Skywalker, for the amusement of Emperor Palpatine, Vader initially gains the upper hand, but is ultimately overwhelmed by the savagery of Luke’s uncontrolled anger.
Chewbacca: Owing a life debt to Han Solo, Chewbacca serves as Solo’s co-pilot and constant ally. Chewbacca does not immediately like Luke Skywalker, reacting caustically when Skywalker attempts to shackle him (Chewbacca) as a means of staging a rescue of Princess Leia on the Death Star. Though the plan is partially successful, the group of liberators are flanked at both ends of a corridor and are forced to escape through a chute to the Imperial trash compactor. Chewbacca complains bitterly as he attempts to prevent himself and the others from being crushed by the grime-spattered compactor while simultaneously fending off the compactor’s resident Dianoga monster.
