Owing a life debt to Han Solo, Chewbacca serves as Solo’s co-pilot and loyal-to-the-death ally. Initially he is amused by the constant bickering between Solo and Princess Leia. Chewbacca does not gain an immediate liking of the impetuous, bumbling Luke Skywalker, reacting caustically when Skywalker attempts to shackle him (Chewbacca) as a means of staging a covert rescue of Princess Leia on the Death Star. Though the plan is partially successful, the group of liberators are flanked at both ends of a corridor and are forced to escape through a chute to the Imperial trash compactor. Chewbacca complains bitterly as he attempts to prevent himself and the others from being crushed by the grime-spattered compactor while simultaneously fending off the compactor’s resident Dianoga monster.
