The T-72 is Russia's main modern battle tank, renowned for its excellent mobility, armour protection, and firepower---even when compared to its western counterparts. Although a tank of advanced design, it suffered heavily during the Gulf War conflict---possibly as a consequence of inadequate Iraqi tanker crew training. The T-72 and its numerous variants continue to serve Russia and many other countries thoughout the world, including Yugoslavia, Belarus, Poland, Syria, Iraq and Iran.
