On “D-Day”, June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord began---the allied invasion of northwestern Europe. A massive seaborne invasion, it involved over 156,000 troops crossing the English Channel to the beaches of Normandy from the southern ports of the United Kingdom.
With the great invasion well underway and the Nazis retreating eastward, the allied forces fought inland towards victory. Accompanying these brave fighting men were their deadly machines of war---one of the most famous of which was the legendary M4A3 Sherman Tank.
Dubbed the “Sherman” this U.S. made tank is among the best-known armor ever produced. Mass-produced by a tireless American war industry numbering near 50,000 by the end of the conflict. The Sherman Tanks proved themselves one of the great weapons of WW2 playing a critical role in breaking out of the Normandy beachhead, and inland within the embattled mazes of French hedgerows.
