The Abomination absorbed a greater dose of gamma radiation, which made his transformation more severe and permanent, while allowing him to retain his intellect. At the beginning, the Abomination technically started out a little stronger than the Hulk, but he lacked Hulk’s ability to gain additional strength proportionate to his increasing rage, so usually the Hulk ended up taking the Abomination down to Chinatown.
The Abomination hated the Hulk, and his continual defeats began to twist his mind much in the same way experienced by Kraven in Kraven’s Last Hunt. Eventually, after MODOK recovered the Abomination as frozen detritus and melted the ice to release him, the Abomination had been reduced into a sniveling mockery of his former self. MODOK pressed him into service, and the whole cycle began anew.
The Abomination also had his stint with toxic waste, which took his original look, the rippled scales, the webbed ears and fish-mouth, and made it even more inhuman. This resulted in parts of the Abomination looking gooey or half-melted. This variant version depicts the Abomination with the side of his face molten and stringy---just like the Abomination’s Special Hot Mucous Sunday with Guacamole & Barium sauce.
