The Thing is a shapeless horror from the stars, crash-landed and imprisoned in the ice wastes of the Antarctic. The entity, apparently with no real substance of its own, has the ability to assimilate and mimic any organic life form it chooses---destroying the chosen specimen in favor of the simulacrum. But to escape from its frozen prison it must become a man, capable of blending with other men, carrying its subterfuge into the thick of human civilization.
The Thing Boxed Set depicts the scene where the Thing, in the guise of a dog, has been boarded up in the kennel for the night with the rest of the dogs. The other dogs promptly push the panic-button, recognizing the true nature of their new canine companion. As a defensive measure, the Thing attempts to assimilate the rest of the dogs. MacReady busts into the kennel, shotgun in hand, just in time to see the entity in its raw-mucous, gelatinous intermediary form, the half-cooked casserole version of the Thing, dog-headed but amorphous, distended along the floor of the kennel, its flesh-probing tendrils scattered everywhere like birthday ribbons.
