Good vs. Evil & Jack the Ripper

We've taken the voyages of the starship Enterprise one adventure further with a series of original movie-style art print sets commemorating every episode of Star Trek, the iconic American television series that aired from 1966 to 1969.

The Original Series has become a cult classic, and its leading-edge plot lines and mores have influenced many science-fiction TV shows and movies that have followed.

Designer/illustrator Juan Ortiz talks about the inspiration for our eighteenth set of Star Trek: The Original Series Art Prints, which includes:

· Episode 5: The Enemy Within. Good Captain Kirk and his evil alter ego are depicted as mirror images in this print for an episode in which a transporter malfunction splits beings into two entities with opposing personalities. Ortiz calls this design Russian-inspired. "I did mirror the image. But it's the mirrored font that really makes this one unique from the rest," he says.

· Episode 16: The Galileo Seven. Spock's leadership is questioned as he struggles to save the crew of a shuttlecraft that has crash landed on Taurus II and they are attacked by large furry creatures. Ortiz says his design "has been compared to an episode of Lost in Space, where the Robinson family encounters a giant cyclops. That's actually because the Star Trek episode brings back memories of the Lost in Space model kit that I had as a kid, which is what the poster is based on."

· Episode 34: The Apple. The primitive, peaceful inhabitants of Gamma Trianguli VI worship a god -- a massive, highly advance computer -- that imprisons a landing party and pulls the Enterprise out of orbit. "This one started with a full image of Vaal, the snake-headed computer, being fired upon by the Enterprise," says Ortiz. "But I was also inspired by the word 'apple' in the title. So the serpent’s eye represents the snake from the Garden of Eden."

· Episode 43: Wolf in the Fold. When Scotty is accused of murder, Kirk must hunt down a Jack-the-Ripper-like entity on Argelius II. Ortiz is bolder here, showing the body of a stabbing victim. He says, "This one was inspired by the horror movies of the '40s through '60s. I wanted more of a "B" movie feel for it. I was careful not to get too graphic with the knife. I made certain there was no blood, but instead placed a red planet behind the female crew member to evoke the blood. The mist coming from the knife that turns into a face. That adds a more fantasy element to it."

The Star Trek: The Original Series Art Prints - Set 18 consists of plate-printed lithographs on 100-pound, aqueous-coated, satin-finish paper. Each print measures 18 inches x 24 inches.

The set and all others in this series will be available for a limited time only. None will be repeated or reprinted after they're gone.
