Sheathed in gritty green-brown scales, the mane-bristled Kothoga is supported by massive hook-taloned paws. Tiny greenish-yellow eyes are situated above tusked jaws framed by outcropping beetle mandibles. Believed to be a mythic creature, the ghastly Kothoga is created when members of a newly discovered South American tribe offer an unspecified transformative concoction to an overly trustful anthropologist. Kothoga is transported along with the Kothoga idol and fungus-laden growth-stimulating leaves to the Museum of Natural History in Chicago, where primary protagonist, Dr. Margo Green, is fastidiously preparing her Superstition exhibition. Slaughtering human prey to extract the hypothalamus from each victim’s brain, Kothoga initially conceals its presence, striking at night, and the murders are erroneously attributed to an inordinately brutal human attacker. Swift despite its massive size, Kothoga attacks with powerful jaws and a serpentine tail, and is capable of clinging to vertical surfaces.
