Rocky in Gold Trunks: Rocky successfully defends his title against a handful of contenders, learning only belatedly that Mickie has been protecting him (Rocky) by selecting comparatively inferior opponents. When Rocky attempts to publicly announce his retirement he is goaded by the insults of the outlandish Clubber Lang into another fight. After suffering a humiliating defeat at the hands of Clubber Lang, Rocky trains alongside Apollo for the rematch. In the follow-up bout, Rocky absorbs Clubber’s thundering roundhouse punches while taunting Clubber to further infuriate him, causing the latter to expend all of his energy.
Clubber Lang in Blue Trunks: At the outset of the rematch, Clubber notices a grim resolve previously absent from Rocky’s eyes. Clubber is thrown off-kilter when a sleeker and more agile Rocky uses a mixture of Apollo’s instructions and his own straightforward style. Rocky strategically taunts Clubber and withstands the latter’s repeated knockout punches until Clubber begins to show fatigue. Breathing heavily, Clubber is finally overwhelmed until he is forced to retreat and guard his head with both gloves. After his guard is dismantled he suffers a calamitous knockout, and Rocky reaquires the Heavyweight Title.
Clubber Lang in Black Trunks: Clubber Lang is dressed in black trunks with white trim, with red gloves. Prior to the first match with Balboa, Clubber broods intently, pacing back and forth and looking from his peripheral as he delivers aspersions and threats to the blundering press assembly. Clubber later goads Rocky on the way to the ring, generating the tumult that causes Mickey to suffer a heart attack. Resilient to Rocky’s opening flurry of punches, Clubber retaliates by thoroughly pulverizing the conflicted and ill-prepared Rocky. Rocky loses the Heavyweight Title almost immediately, and is forced, battered and bludgeoned with puffed-shut eyes, to console the dying Mickie by reporting a false victory.
