Despite his reservations, Rocky agrees to manage Apollo’s corner during the latter’s match with amateur Russian boxer Ivan Drago. After Drago easily defeats Apollo and gloats over his victory, Rocky is obliged to avenge his friend by fighting a second exhibition match against Drago in Moscow. Drago continues his regular training regimen while Rocky trains in a tundra, scaling mountains and hefting horse carts. Drago initially overwhelms the incongruously smaller Rocky, however in the long term he fails to inflict serious damage. He privately equates Rocky to a piece of metal, and is ultimately overwhelmed by Rocky’s intractable resolve.
