The Avengers Headknocker: Captain America is situated atop an Avengers-insignia base. Barred from enlistment in the U.S. Army, the sickly Steve Rogers volunteers for the military-funded Project: Rebirth, and is transformed into the super solider Captain America. He is transported behind enemy lines, successfully infiltrating a HYDRA facility to rescue Bucky Barnes and the latter’s fellow soldiers. Later, after the Red Skull is seemingly vaporized by the Tesseract, Captain America neutralizes the Red Skull’s superweapons by piloting the latter’s aircraft into the Antarctic. Decades later Captain America is recovered, resuscitated from suspended animation, and is recruited by Nick Fury as a future member of the Avengers. Transported to S.H.I.E.L.D. research facility, the Tesseract is later used by Loki to escape exile; Loki absconds with the power-imbuing artifact, forming an alliance with an army of Chitauri invaders, prompting Nick Fury to activate the Avengers.
