In The Exorcist, subsequent to a seemingly harmless Ouija board communication with entity calling itself “Captain Howdy”, Regan succumbs to delirium and horrifying nightmares before finally throwing savage tantrums and performing bizarre stunts in concert with superhuman strength. Defying medical explanation, Regan is revealed to be possessed by the foul demon Pazuzu (initially identifying itself as the Devil), Regan is transformed from an initially precocious little girl into a noxious filth-spewing presence so firmly entrenched as to require a strenuous exorcism staged by the disillusioned Father Karras and the aged, experience-haunted Father Merrin.
