The Rocketeer was cool because he had a helmet like a Cobra operative, a prototype rocket pack, and because his girlfriend was Betty Page. Originally his comic took place over a sparse series of excerpts, and then later recounted in graphic novels.
Taking place in 1938, the Rocketeer began as a stunt flyer, trying to wrestle with his more or less inauspicious life and the directly-related struggles to maintain a relationship with a super hot Betty Page. The Rocketeer ended up tangling with common thugs, hired killers, shady government agents and foreign powers. Betty Page pretty much just played herself, a pin-up girl, although by and large the comic avoided some aspects of her career. Eventually, the bad guys kidnapped Betty to get to the Rocketeer, which involved Betty tied up in the back seat and the Rocketeer slugging it out with the thugs.
He was a little more sympathetic than your average hero, because he had more mundane problems, and because, without the rocket pack, he was just an ordinary guy. When he tangled with the bad guys he took beatings. Betty was constantly losing patience with his frequent disappearances, and the Rocketeer was reluctant to explain the actual circumstances because he was worried that knowledge of his dual identity might put her more in harm’s way. The comics were pretty fun to read.
Later, they did that movie, and the one thing you could say was that the guy they hired looked just like the Rocketeer. Pretty much everything looked just like the comic. But, since it was a Disney movie, his girlfriend was struggling actress, extremely hot, that girl who played Betty Ross in the Hulk movie, but not Betty Page. Otherwise, the dynamic was pretty much the same. One poor guys struggling to hold onto a girl, using his rocket pack to battle the devices of mobsters and the Nazis.
This hardcore action figure, with its high level of articulation and expansive attention to detail, hits the mark once again. The stylized flight costume with the button-flap jacket and the high boots. The metal helmet with the iron mask look and the aerodynamic fin. The rocket pack with the dual thrusters. This guy is tailor made for any Rocketeer fan. Good luck supplying your own Betty Page.
