Tails: Tails is a golden-hued fox with a pair of plume-like white-tipped tails, clad in white gloves and red and white shoes. Tails appears as Sonic’s sidekick and as a playable character in the Genesis version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. A longtime friend enamored of Sonic’s heroism, Tails is eager to prove his mettle to Sonic. Tail’s two tails equip him with an ability to generate a helicopter effect, allowing him to keep in stride with Sonic.
Knuckles: Knuckles is sheathed in lank red dreadlocks and is dressed in white gloves. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the heroic Knuckles operates under the misconception that Sonic and Tails intend to steal the Master Emerald by virtue of which Knuckles’ home, Angel Island, remains aloft. Knuckles matches Sonic’s blinding speed with brute strength and punching power.
Amy: The tousled-haired Amy is dressed in a red dress, with white gloves and red and white shoes. Groupie and self-professed girlfriend of Sonic, Amy Rose first appears in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, a victim kidnapped by Metal Sonic. Visiting the Little Planet, Sonic and Amy discover the planet to be in the thrall of Doctor Robotnik; Sonic is pitted against Robotnik’s latest minion, Metal Sonic. Amy is subsequently promoted to a playable character in Sonic Adventure, in which she embarks on a quest to locate the family of an egg callously discarded by Robotnik.
Super Sonic: In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic’s transformation into Super Sonic is accomplished by obtaining all seven of the Chaos Emeralds and carrying fifty or more rings simultaneously; Super Sonic expends one ring for every second of his transformation and when the rings are depleted his reverts to his original form. In Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic is introduced to his ally, Tails. Having recovered from his defeat in the original game, the disgruntled Doctor Robotnik secretly follows Sonic and embarks on a mission to plunder the Chaos Emeralds to power the Death Egg warship.
Sonic: Sonic is fringed with spikes of blue fur, and is seated in a blue and red racer. In the original game, Sonic strove to prevent the creepy Dr. Robotnik from acquiring the six Chaos Emeralds required to transform the animals inhabiting South Island into robot minions. Completing the requisite six zones at blinding speed, collecting gold rings in the process, Sonic ultimately faces his rotund adversary in the Final Zone.
Metal Sonic: Comparatively grim in appearance, Metal Sonic is an evil mechanical doppelganger of Sonic the Hedgehog created by Eggman, equipped with both a laser cannon and a forcefield device. He appears in Sonic the Hedgehog CD, deployed into the past to alter history in Eggman’s favor. Kidnapping Sonic’s ultimate groupie, Amy Rose, Metal Sonic lures Sonic into a race on the Sonic Speedway. In Knuckles’ Chaotix, Metal Sonic attempts to acquire the Chaos Rings. In Sonic Generations, Metal Sonic battles Classic Sonic.
