Initially Spike and his dad, Sparkplug, were working on an oilrig when the platform was attacked by Decepticons. The Autobots intervened, saving Spike and Sparkplug, after which the father and son became friends and allies to the Autobots. Spike Witwicky developed a strong friendship with Bumblebee, while Sparkplug meanwhile seemed to identify more with Autobots like Wheeljack.
One of Spike’s darker moments came when his consciousness was temporarily transferred to a monster creation made of various Transformer components. The transfer left Spike, now Autobot Spike, in a confused state. Megatron opportunistically talked Autobot Spike into temporarily joining the Decepticons, although Spike ultimately came back to his senses and left Megatron in the lurch. Sparkplug also temporarily defected to the Decepticon side while under the influence of one of Doctor Arkeville’s mind control chip; Sparkplug managed to resist the influence at least a couple of times before the Automats devised the means to countermine the mind control chip; Sparkplug thereafter officially became a charter member of the extremely popular Doctor Arkeville Fan Club.
