During his near-death experience on the ice world of Hoth, Luke Skywalker is prompted by the ghostly Obi-Wan to seek out the Jedi Master Yoda on Dagobah. Initially Yoda expresses doubts in regards to Skywalker’s compatibility, and the training slowly progresses the skeptical Skywalker is astounded to witness the feats made capable by Yoda’s seemingly effortless mastery of the Force. As Skywalker’s visions of his friends’ suffering intensify, Yoda conceded that Skywalker might possibly be able to aid some of them to some degree, although at great cost. The ill-prepared Luke Skywalker is lured to Bespin, where he is initially led into the ominous carbonite-freezing chamber, however Skywalker escapes the freezing process only recently tested on Han Solo. The duel shifts to the bowels of Cloud City where the overmatched Skywalker is effortlessly maimed and defeated by Darth Vader. As the thoroughly defeated Skywalker hovers precariously on the verge of an airshaft, Vader completes his victory by admitting that he, Vader, having long since discarded the name of Anakin Skywalker, is the father of Luke Skywalker. Luke desperately refutes the claim while simultaneously believing it. Sensing Skywalker’s weakness, Vader extends his hand, proposing that he and Luke overthrow the Emperor and rule the galaxy as father and son. Refusing, Skywalker plunges himself into the airshaft, clinging to an antenna cluster on Bespin’ underside. He unconsciously establishes a mental link with Princess Leia which enables the latter to guide the Millennium Falcon to Luke’s location.
