Following the theft of the of the Casket of Ancient Winters, Loki manipulates Thor into a precipitous invasion of Jotunheim, instigating war between the Frost Giants and the Asgardians. Thor, along with Sif, Loki and the Warriors Three, is quickly overwhelmed by the giants, necessitating the intervention of Odin. Afterwards, Odin de-powers Thor, relieving him of Mjolnir and banishing him to Earth. The landlocked Mjolnir is discovered a few miles away, and is enclosed inside a hastily-build S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. Thor fights his way through a gauntlet of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives, unaware of the presence of Hawkeye, only to learn that he (Thor) is no longer capable of lifting the magic hammer. Thor later sacrifices himself to defend Earth’s populace against the monstrous Destroyer, redeeming himself. Briefly coordinating with S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Thor formally announces himself as Earth’s ally and protector, and is later recruited as a member of the Avengers in direct response to Loki’s acquisition of the Tesseract and subsequent alliance with Chitauri invaders.
