The McQuarrie version of Darth Vader calls for a costume a little more similar to that of the Phantom of the Paradise, a more body-conforming black leather outfit with a jagged hem to both the waist robe and cape. The McQuarrie version featured a more severe-looking, almost insectoid version of a helmet not unlike a Nazi respirator mask. In addition to a variation of the lightsaber with a flared thrust at the base of the blade, the McQuarrie Vader wore a weapon belt and hip-sheathed blaster pistol.
Originally, this version of Darth Vader was meant to indicate an array of life support gear donned by Vader during the boarding of the Tantive IV. Apparently, Vader was not originally imagined as a ruined human figure rebuilt with cybernetic prosthetics, and this grim black-clad incarnation was not intended to be his default appearance. Fortunately, however, someone along the way gave the McQuarrie concept a good look and made the right decision---otherwise Vader might have ended up resembling someone like Kalgon from Space Mutiny. Kalgon---blow me away!
