The AT-TE is a plastic/die cast hybrid featuring an environmental base. The AT-TE somewhat resembled a six-legged insect---a ponderous vehicle not the size of an AT-AT but still large enough to carry a handful of gunners apart from the pilot crew and a contingent of transport troopers. The gunners were needed to man a cross-section of weapons---the large primary cannon, the two rotating forward guns and the aft lasers.
Initially, gunners signed on as a kind of test squad, when the AT-TE’s were introduced onto the battlefield. Cannily, the thunderous AT-TE’s marked a resonant presence. After the success of the metal monsters, the AT-TE’s became the standard model for alterations and enhancements whenever a drastic change in terrain was in order.
