The pewter-finish IG-88 is detachable from the mechanically-styled nameplate base of his translucent display bubble. Boasting limited articulation, the lanky assassin droid comes equipped with bandoleer, blaster pistol and blaster rifle. His gunmetal chassis overlaps mechanized joints and exposed circuitry. His lethality is mildly belied by his casually quizzical demeanor. IG-88 is imbued with superior strength and durability, and he’s equipped with reasonably extensive on-board weaponry.
The supplemental material provides IG-88’s origin. He was an experimental assassin droid that gained self-awareness, violently killing his hapless humanoid creators before he ultimately received the epiphany that all organic life forms are a complete waste of space. At the outset of his campaign, he logically decided to transfer his consciousness to three duplicates---IG-88 B, C, and D. He became a bounty hunter only for convenience sake, establishing a tactical cover and networking his vast staging ground in the process. The Solo job was peripheral to him, although because of the job, IG-88 did run afoul of Boba Fett a couple of times. Ultimately, IG-88’s scheme was to transfer his enlightened consciousness to the second version of the Death Star, giving him the ability to achieve his goal on a much grander scale.
