Scrapmetal drones resemble spiders or insects in their vehicle modes---four limbs with inverted joints carrying cockpit mounts for large rotating guns. Their Cyber Key function enables a spring-loaded bayonet running the full length of the gun barrel. In robot mode, Scrapmetal has a vaguely apelike shape occurring either in fist mode or with the fists enclosed by large jackhammers similar to those of Gen 1 (cartoon version) Rumble. Initially the Cybertron line included only the red Scrapmetal, identifying him as the freakish pseudo-sentient leader of the other Scrapmetal drones. This new yellow drone owes directly to the fact that in the Galaxy Force line the Scrapmetal (or Ramble) drones were initially released in three colors, red (wild cherry), blue (blue raspberry) and yellow (sour lemon), so, now is the time to add a new color facet to the Scrapmetal army.
The Scrapmetal horde consists of a nearly endless supply of ravening robotic parasites apparently grown to more formidable proportions and hurled en masse upon the surface of Cybertron in the wake of the cataclysmic black hole. The drones are tentatively considered Terrorcons (though not necessarily related to the Energon Terrorcons) and the Cybetronian Defense Team was formed to neutralize the growing threat that they represented. During one instance, the drones attacked and cannibalized Crumplezone, necessitating Galvatron’s resurrection of Crumplezone in the form of Dark Crumplezone. At least one other storyline has cannily placed the Scrapmetal drones vaguely under the command of super-zombie Dark Scorponok.
