Scorponok was one of the largest Decepticon toys ever created, more or less presented as an adversarial equivalent to Fortress Maximus. The original version was a triple-changer. He was partnered with Lord Zarak, who transformed into Scorponok’s head and occupied the cockpit position of a built-in visor-mounted helmet. In scorpion mode, Scorponok was a vast juggernaut, heavily armored, bulky, armed with both the tail blasters and a series of rotating double barrel cannons. In fortress mode he featured ramps, defenses, repair bays and a tower fortification. In robot mode, he was equipped with his serrated pincher claws, his anti-gravity gun and his battle shield.
In the cartoon, Scorponok originated as a construction of Lord Zarak, who reformatted a subterranean city and binary-bounded with his creation just as fellow members of the Hive had done with other Decepticons. Scorponok’s toy bio, in which he appeared to be a more free-standing character, described him as a merciless and remorseless warlord, one who eagerly preyed upon the weak, although in Transformers: The Ultimate Guide, Scorponok is referenced as disciplined and honorable, a staunch patriot with the best interests of Cybertron in mind. In the cut-short Dreamwave continuity, Scorponok didn’t play a huge role, but he was one of the many Decepticon warriors rallied by Megatron as the latter solidified his conquest position.
