Optimus Primal didn’t quite have Optimus Prime’s punching power, but he was just as noble, self-sacrificing and courageous as the Gen 1 prime. He made a good leader, as far as the Beast Wars were concerned, although everyone sort of took a downward slant for the whole screwball Beast Machines storyline.
Primal’s levelheaded leadership balanced nicely against Megatron’s complicated schemes, deceptions, and delusions of godhood. Primal began as the conventional ape, then went Transmetal, and then finally became Optimal Optimus (the name coined by Megatron) when he temporarily housed the Matrix while the stasis-locked Gen 1 Prime was under repair. As Optimal, he even gained a third vehicle mode.
Optimus Primal is just one of the good guys, reminiscent of the Autobot heroes, aware of his limitations, compassionate, and prepared to go to war when war is necessary. His integrity helped to win Dinobot over to the Maximal side, and held the rest of his crew together all the way until the end of the Beast Wars.
