Megatron was the consummate villain, generating a new scheme for conquest pretty much every 7.6 seconds. By and large, his whole elite group acknowledged him as a powerful and capable leader, especially Starscream, the most noble of the Decepticons, who proved his undying loyalty to Megatron day in and day out.
However, when it came down to a brawl between Megatron and Optimus, Megatron usually took a pretty brisk trouncing. Hence, more schemes. One time he invented a machine to harness the strengths and abilities of the other Decepticons, like Starscream’s null ray or Skywarp’s teleport, then he formally challenged Prime and sent the Constructicons to sabotage Teletran-1 so that the super-computer couldn’t register the modifications that would have disqualified the outcome of the duel.
In the movie, he took an epic beating from Prime, leaving him vulnerable to Starscream’s opportunism during the ride back to Cybertron. Cast out into space like trash on a highway, Megatron drifted into the gravitational field of Unicron, finally trading in his pistol mode for a Starscream-annihilating cannon mode.
