Initially, Bumblebee was sort of the youngster of the group, bonding closely with the teenage Spike and maintaining the friendship even into Spike’s adulthood. He seems to be one of the more memorable characters out of the original group of Autobots.
In the movie, Bumblebee played a minimal but significant part. He and Spike were manning Moonbase 2 when Unicron lumbered through like a Sunday afternoon behemoth at a buffet bar. Bumblebee and Spike rigged a self-destruct sequence, jumped into a shuttle and abandoned base. Unfortunately, Unicron ate the self-destruct function like a fried banana sandwich and used his gravitational field to draw Bumblebee and Spike back into his vortex maw.
Luckily, Bumblebee and Spike, still intact, were among those that were rescued just before the conveyer line dropped them into Unicron’s digestive foundry. After the movie, he still played a primary role in the show, eventually being reformatted into Goldbug.
