R5-D4 conforms to elements of R2’s design, but has a more pylon-shaped flattop head with different receptors and a prominent antenna. The figure, done primarily in white and red, is depicted with the third tread foot ended from the barrel-shaped body. Overall the figure looks slightly weathered like the one from the movie.
Initially, Luke and his uncle were satisfied with this model. Their decision, had it not been altered, would have divided R2 from C3-PO and negated the entire premise of three movies in the process. However, whether by coincidence or not, the R5 model blew a gasket before it left the sales floor, which caused Skywalker’s uncle to squabble with the Jawas until the deal was modified to include R2 instead.
