Bespin to seemed to be a major point where several events coincided. Han Solo arrived, unsuspecting, thinking he could find safe haven with his old friend Lando. Unfortunately for Solo, the Empire had already arrived to give Cloud City one long and tyrannical rectal exam. Additionally, Boba Fett had followed Solo there, and if you go by aspects of the back story, IG-88 (more precisely one extension of IG-88) had followed along too, intending to catch Solo and trump Fett both at the same time.
Later, Luke Skywalker shows up a dollar short and a minute late, in the wake of Solo’s transformation into a carbonite Hershey bar, only to be confronted by Darth Vader, who promptly gives Luke a good old-fashioned father-to-son trouncing. Vader looked cool during that scene, looming and shadowy, slapping Luke all over the place, using his Vader whammy to hurl detritus in young Skywalker’s direction.
This is the Vader from that scene, complete with cloth cape and robe, hand extended towards his battered, disbelieving offspring, as if to say hey, it’s okay, you’ll have a new robot hand just like Daddy. Luke chose ‘Option B’ which entailed a blind plummet into a long duct, where he was ultimately rescued. Vader didn’t care. He was just biding his time, waiting for the sequel.
