The War Within series, one of the best Transformers series’ out there, involves the days of Megatron’s violent conquest. When the story picks up, Megatron has already destroyed Sentinel Prime. At this point, the Autobots are severely demoralized, and Grimlock, the stand-in leader, has become contemptuous of anything related to a Prime. The Matrix is believed by many to be mythical.
No one is more surprised than Optronix himself when he is chosen to become the new Prime. He’s detached from the cause, maybe even a little apathetic. When he is reformatted into Optimus Prime, his feelings still haven’t changed that much. He’s still considering the idea of leading the Autobots in a mass exodus of Cybertron. Grimlock more or less refuses to acknowledge him as a leader.
But once Optimus is finally drawn into a duel with Megatron, and he becomes aware of everything at stake, his heroism emerges and with it his true strength. He hammers Megatron but does not destroy him. Afterwards, as the first glimpses are revealed of the greatest and most beloved of all Autobot leaders, things start to come together, and Megatron suddenly finds himself as odds with a much more resilient enemy.
