Anakin Skywalker is darkly-clad, with an overlying cloth Jedi robe. He’s detailed with that unhappy, pinched expression characterized by his morbid fascination with the Dark Side. This is Anakin during the latter part of his downward spiral. He’s still got the blue lightsaber, he’s not quite there yet, but already he’s buying somewhat into Palpatine’s hypnotic drivel.
His Jedi cohorts inadvertently push him further along by failing to acknowledge his appointed position to the council and by assigning others to missions against Palpatine’s recommendations. Add to all of these things the desultory dreams involving Padme’s death while in childbirth. The exclusionism and resentment just kept building up, while Palpatine stood off to the side wringing his hands in anticipation. Finally, Palpatine confesses to his role as the secret Sith boss and tells Anakin that he can show him a way to prevent Padme’s death. Finally, after the betrayal of Mace Windu, you have the Taster’s Choice moment where Palpatine admits that he doesn’t actually know how to save Padme’s life, but it’s okay, because the two of them can figure it out together.
