Mario: Mario is clad in blue overalls, white gloves, a red shirt and a red hat bearing his superhero-like “M” insignia. Under the name “Jumpman” Mario initially appears as the protagonist in Donkey Kong. He later returns in the Mario Bros. games, emerging valiantly and selflessly to defend the Mushroom Kingdom and Princess Toadstool against the minions of King Koopa.
Luigi: Luigi is clad in blue overalls, white gloves, a green shirt and a green hat bearing his superhero-like “L” insignia. Luigi is the younger brother of Mario; initially he is nearly identical to Mario, although in Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi is a little taller and skinnier than Mario, and is also a better jumper.
Toad: Toad is an anthropomorphic mushroom who also resembles a salt shaker. Toad’s people, indigenous to the Mushroom Kingdom, are often found to be retainers of Princess Toadstool. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Toad is a playable character, extremely useful in terms of speed and power, but decidedly underwhelming in jumping capacity.
Yoshi: A friendly bright green dinosaur with clunky brown shoes, Yoshi appears in Superior Mario World, aiding Mario by become the latter’s mount. A valuable ally, Yoshi sometimes gobbles villains and regurgitating them in the form of a large egg. Few things are worse than getting pummeled from the saddle and being forced to watch Yoshi (with his lamentably short attention span) run away.
