Mario/Green Yoshi: Mario is clad in blue overalls, white gloves, a red shirt and a red hat bearing his superhero-like “M” insignia. In the Mario Bros. games, Mario valiantly defends the Mushroom Kingdom and Princess Toadstool against the minions of King Koopa. Yoshi is a friendly dinosaur with clunky shoes. Yoshi appears in Superior Mario World, providing Mario with a mount. Yoshi is useful in that he had the ability to gobble down various enemy types and would sometimes regurgitate said enemy types in egg-form.
Luigi/Yellow Yoshi: Luigi is clad in blue overalls, white gloves, a green shirt and a green hat bearing his superhero-like “L” insignia. Luigi is the younger brother of Mario; initially he is nearly identical to Mario, although in Super Mario Bros. 2, Luigi is a little taller and skinnier than Mario, and is also a better jumper. Yellow Yoshi has a red shell and green shoes. Originally appearing in Super Mario World, the Yellow Yoshi has the ability to generate mini-earthquakes.
Blue Yoshi/Pink Yoshi: A Blue Yoshi typically has a red shell/saddle and red shoes, and he can fly so long as he holds a shell of any color in his mouth. If a Yoshi becomes a Blue Yoshi by virtue of the Wing Power-Up, he and Mario are corralled into a temporary bonus stage. A Pink Yoshi will sometimes have a red shell/saddle and yellow shoes. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, the Pink Yoshi is rideable, replacing the originally intended Red Yoshi.
Bowser/Toad: Commander of the Koopa Troop, Bowser serves as Mario’s archenemy. Bowser’s primary objective is to successfully kidnap Princess Toadstool and conquer the Mushroom Kingdom. Toad is an anthropomorphic mushroom who also resembles a salt shaker. Toad’s race is indigenous to the Mushroom Kingdom, often found to be retainers of Princess Toadstool. In Super Mario Bros. 2, Toad is a playable character, extremely useful in terms of speed and power, but decidedly underwhelming in jumping capacity.
