R2-D2’s various retractable appendages and instruments enable him to serve the functions of starship mechanic and computer interface specialist. R2 originally performs maintenance duty on behalf of the Royal Engineers of Naboo aboard Queen Amidala’s royal starship. He enables the ship to escape the Trade Federation’s blockade. Later, on Tatooine, R2-D2 first encounters C-3PO, the protocol droid which was being assembled by the young Anakin Skywalker.
