The extensively battered Rocky Balboa is wearing blood-spattered white shorts, with red gloves. In the original movie, the undisputed World Heavyweight Champion Apollo Creed decides to grant the unknown Rocky Balboa a title fight, primarily because Creed is amused by Rocky’s nickname, the Italian Stallion. Creed never actually takes Balboa seriously, which is demonstrated by his relaxed training regimen, but his frivolous demeanor vanishes at the outset of the fight, when Rocky succeeds in knocking down Creed down for the first time in his career. Driven by the singular determination to complete all 15 rounds, a thoroughly bloody and pulverized Rocky succeeds in withstanding everything in Creed’s arsenal, and narrowly loses to Creed by split decision.
