In the Thor movie, Thor is manipulated by Loki into leading Sif and the Warriors Three in a battle against the Frost Giants, disrupting the tentative truce established by Loki. After Thor and the others are eventually overwhelmed by the Frost Giants’ forces, Odin intervenes, rescuing Thor and his friends, however in a burst of anger he (Odin) temporarily de-powers Thor and makes Mjolnir inaccessible to the God of Thunder. Thor later returns from Asgard shortly after the original capture of Loki, relieving Captain America and Iron Man of custody and transporting Loki to a neutral location to attempt to reason with him (Loki). Loki divulges his alliance with the Chitauri invaders and confesses that the Tesseract is now beyond his grasp. Iron Man launches an attack against Thor, initially sustaining damage from the striking power of Mjolnir and then gaining a power surge from Thor’s lightning attack which temporarily gains Iron Man an upper hand. Arriving belatedly, Captain America serves as a mediator.

Mjolnir ("that which smashes") is the hammer wielded by Thor, the Norse God of Thunder. Ordered by Odin, Chief of the Norse Gods, dwarven blacksmiths forged Mjolnir from the core of a dying star.
It has been stated by Odin himself that Mjolnir's power has no equal. Mjolnir itself is extremely durable like the Earth metal Adamantium and combined with the various enchantments placed upon it by Odin, is for all intents and purposes, indestructible.
