In order to harness the power-imbuing Tesseract, Johann Schmidt ordered Abraham Erskine to treat him (Schmidt) with an imperfect prototypal version of the super soldier serum; Schmidt’s heightened physical prowess enabled him to master the Tesseract, although it resulted in the ghastly disfigurement which earned him the derisive nickname, Red Skull. Red Skull is placed in command of the HYDRA organization, a scientific division which enables him to develop advanced weapons powered by the vast energies of the Tesseract. Ultimately, asserting his dominance by virtue of super weapons, Red Skull embarks on a quest to pulverize the whole of mankind into groveling subservience.
