Following Apollo 8's successful orbit of the Moon in December 1968, the next mission linked the Command Service Module (CSM) and the Lunar Module (LM) together as a complete Apollo system. The LM had not been ready in time for the preceeding flight, and on March 3, 1969 it took off on a 10-day low Earth orbit, propelled by a Saturn V rocket. This particular mission was significant because it was the first manned flight of the LM, the first docking took place, and it featured the first 2-man spacewalk. Apollo 9 proved that orbital rendezvous was possible, something essential for the lunar landing.
