The episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before” involves the mystery of the destroyed vessel SS Valiant. The Enterprise encounters a strange, damaging barrier, in the process of which the ship psychiatrist, Dr. Elizabeth Dehner, and the ship navigator, Gary Mitchell, are effected and rendered unconscious by the barrier. Once Dehner and Mitchell are resuscitated, they have both acquired burgeoning telepathic and telekinetic powers. Dehner’s abilities develop at a slightly slower rate, while Mitchell’s powers increase rapidly, imbibing the navigator with psychotic petulance and delusions of godhood. Captain Kirk is faced with a dilemma, as Mitchell prepares to usurp the command of the Enterprise.
