Initially, Kirk was lured within range of the Reliant, not realizing that Captain Terrell had been replaced by the vengeful Khan. Abruptly the Reliant raised her shields and belted the Enterprise with a destructive assault. Kirk managed to bluff Khan long enough to call up the Reliant’s prefix code, enabling Spock to order the Reliant to lower her shields. The Enterprise threw everything she had at the Reliant, forcing Khan to grudgingly withdraw. For the rematch, Kirk managed to goad Khan into the Mutara Nebula, in which the shields of both vessels would be rendered inert. Ultimately, Khan’s last act of vengeance involved the activation of the Genesis Device in a self-destroying attempt to obliterate the badly damaged Enterprise.
