Originally conceived as a weak specimen augmented and reconstituted by the experimental Super Soldier Serum, Captain America began his superhero career by goose-stepping all over Nazis during World War II. After a spell of suspended animation, the captain was reintroduced to the world, a slightly more modern world in which he regained his superhero standing. Captain America’s shield, serving as both a symbol and a weapon, was steadily upgraded to a nearly invulnerable circular shield, a freak hybrid of steel and Vibranium.
