Astrotrain was always one of the cooler Decepticons, both in appearance and personality. Like that time he went to the alien planet and passed himself off as a god among the gullible humanoid populace. Or like the time he and Blitzwing established their own respective headquarters using the subway station and the football stadium. Once or twice, Astrotrain allied himself with Starscream in the interest of minor treacherous schemes, to Starscream’s detriment of course. Either way, Astrotrain is a Decepticon with one of the best names of all time.
Astrotrain had that whole shifting mass thing, which gave him ordinary Decepticon proportions as a robot, but which allowed him, in shuttle mode, to transport an entire Decepticon invasion, including Devastator, back to Cybertron---although he was required to drop a few passengers in order to make the full trip.
Later background information would designate Astrotrain and as his fellow Triple-Changers as the successful experimentations of a forward-thinking Shockwave, who kept tinkering until he developed Sixshot.
This is the black and white Japanese release version of Astrotrain, contrasting with the original grey and purple US release. The well known cartoon colors are omitted in favor of colors corresponding more with Astrotrain’s individual vehicle modes. And if any other Transformers decide to mutter some wisecrack about Astrotrain’s chessboard color scheme, well, that’s why he carries a really big gun.
