Scourge had a more sinister look than many of his Decepticon cohorts, which may have something to do with the wings and the mildly satanic beard. In vehicle mode he was a short of high-speed hovercraft mounted with a large miner-style searchlight. In vehicle mode, the outer casing of the hovercraft divided and formed into batlike wings. In the cartoon, the wings were much more pronounced, and Scourge was equipped with red-tipped talons. Additionally, Scourge commanded a small squadron of Scourge clones called the Sweeps.
Initially in Transformers: The Movie, Scourge originated as Thundercracker, one of the handful of damaged Decepticons jettisoned from Astrotrain’s hull after the massive defeat of the Decepticons at Autobot City. Like Galvatron and Cyclonus, Scourge was a machination of Unicron. In the movie, Scourge didn’t have much in the way of lines, instead representing a formidable attack force and a sinister shadow in Galvatron’s corner. Afterwards, Scourge’s appearances on the cartoon were a little more noteworthy. Among other things, Scourge briefly suffered possession by Starscream’s ghost, and his contact with the Matrix caused him to mutate into a bizarre super-powered creature. In the Dreamwave continuity, Scourge was portrayed as Unicron’s individual creation as opposed to a revamped warrior, and he was given a large number of Sweep minions in order to pursue Unicron’s personal interests on a much wider scale.
