An alien plant creature, Groot originally arrives on Earth with the intention of capturing and studying human life forms; after the destruction of the original Groot, a duplicate is created to battle against the Hulk. Ultimately Groot is recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D. as a member of the Howling Commandos. He sacrifices himself on behalf of his teammates, although a small fraction of him is recovered by Raccoon Rocket and nurtured into full regrowth.
