Originally, during the Secret Wars, Spider-Man replaces his damaged costume with a black alien symbiote, however the suit’s negative influence ultimately forces Peter Parker to disentangle himself. Many years later, Spider-Man’s decision to trade his classic costume for an ordinary fabric version of the black costume, associated with the aggressive persona triggered by the Black Symbiote, is reflective of personal turmoil. Regretting his decision to publicly resister his identity and shaken by the sight of a prison for the unregistered superhumans, Spider-Man leaves the Avengers Tower with his family, generating conflict with the pro-registrant Iron Man. In the aftermath of a jailbreak which results in one of the most calamitous battles of the Civil War, Spider-Man retains his standing as a member of the unsanctioned Avengers.
