In “Five Characters in Search of an Exit” an Army major assumes tentative command of a group of people including a clown, a hobo, a ballerina and bagpiper. All five characters have recently come to awareness inside a dark cylindrical space with an unreachable ceiling. Each of the five characters offers his/her own interpretation of the cylindrical prison; the clown believes himself to be trapped in a dream, although he later agrees with the major’s assertion that the five characters are trapped in Hell. The five characters are ultimately revealed to be mismatched dolls, plucked from their original environment and tossed haphazardly into a Christmas donation barrel for a girls’ orphanage.
The episode “The Eye of the Beholder” primarily centers on reluctant protagonist Janet Tyler, who has undergone the final surgery in a series of procedures intended to reshape what is implied to be a freakish appearance which alienates her from virtually everyone in the world. Janet laments at length; she is desperate to have the bandages prematurely removed from her face, primarily due to her fear that her latest operation is yet another failure. Ultimately the bandages are removed with agonizing slowness to reveal the face of a beautiful blonde woman, and the doctor and other staff members, representative of the whole of Janet’s menacing alternate reality, are revealed to have the faces of ghastly, asymmetrical monsters.
