Already a champion of Asgard, Thor serves as a defender of Midgard as well. Thor becomes a founding member of the Avengers, battling against Earth-based super villains. In the hopes of adding humility to Thor’s otherwise virtuous character, Odin merges Thor with Donald Blake. Mjolnir’s etched phrase, “Whoever holds the hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of… Thor,” owes to the fact that one must be virtuous enough to lift the hammer. On the rare occasions that such a phenomenon occurs, the warrior in question is transformed into a kind of Asgardian manifestation, as in the case of Beta Ray Bill. Mjolnir returns to its wielder after a strike is complete; in once instance, when Thor is ensorcelled by Loki’s accomplice Lorelei, he hurls the hammer into space and takes Loki into his grasp, threatening to pulverize Loki’s whole head with the hammer’s return impact. Mjolnir facilitates flight and transdimensional travel. On different occasions Loki has attempted to forge duplicate hammers, all of which are variously potent but ultimately flawed and inferior to the real Mjolnir.
