The DC Chess Collection begins with the Batman chess set, which pits Gotham's greatest heroes against the Joker's villains of Arkham Asylum. Each character is superbly rendered, cast from a specially formulated metallized resin and painted by expert model-makers. Each issue comes complete with an in-depth 16-page magazine providing detail on the character as well as essential chess tips for players of all levels. Continue your collection with Man-Bat (Black Rook) (#24) and Black Mask (Black Pawn) (#25).
The gruesome Man-Bat is posed with arch-ribbed wings outstretched. Hoping to alleviate his deafness by virtue of an experimental bat-extract formula, Dr. Kirk Langstrom inadvertently transforms himself into the Man-Bat, initially an uncontrollable monster. Batman struggles to incapacitate Langstrom in the hopes of developing a cure, however the formula is also ingested by Langstrom’s wife, Francine, transforming the latter into the She-Bat, and is later administered to the couple’s son, Aaron, to offset a fatal illness. In his Man-Bat form, Langstrom reverts to animal intelligence and instinct, however in some instances he retains sufficient faculties to assist superheroes such as Batman and Superman. He possesses heightened strength, agility and endurance, and is benefited by natural sonar which enables him to navigate complete darkness.
